What tools do I need?It depends, do you want to do traditional or digital drawings? If traditional, all you need is the cheapest paper (printer paper? that cheap sketchbook? even a notebook) and a pencil/mechanical pencil you're confortable with, oh, an eraser too. Stories about pretentious professors, failed experiments, and unsupportive families get a lot of attention. I, as a self-taught artist, have struggled a lot trying to learn and understand how to draw well and do digital painting. So I decided to put on a series of journals on this topic providing tips and resources, hoping that it can be useful for anyone who is willing to become an artist.

UPDATE for January 2020:
I created this guide in 2011, so you'll have to take it with a grain of salt since dA has updated a bazillion things since then LOL. It now looks like many codes don't work in Literature submissions anymore, (or disable the "Eclipse" version of the site and show the old site instead), so some of the demonstrations here only look like regular text. But they should display properly if you copy/paste them in the comments. Here's some nice useful things to check out (if you havent already) that i like to look at to improve or just watch for inspiration
FYI i learn more from watching things so most of these are gonna be video tutorials, artists talking while painting and timelapse paintings, since i prefer analyzing peoples workflow and try it out than straight tutorials that tell you what to do (not there's anything wrong with it though :P)
